On the up and up

Miss Cate has had a rough two weeks of life...once we got home from the hospital she immediately took a turn for the bad. She began to scream ALL day long beginning the holiday weekend and really peaking on my first day home alone with the girls. I was in tears by Avery's nap time while I frantically tried to get her down and hold a screaming baby at the same time. Cate continued to scream all through Avery's nap and until about 5 pm when she finally passed out from exhaustion with swollen, purple eyes. This continued the next day and into Thursday morning. I wasn't satisfied with how our pediatrician explained Cate's pain and issues away by saying it was just colic. So after 48+ hours of a screaming baby, I made an appointment with a new pediatrician in a practice that several of my friends use. Immediately I was put at ease just by his "we can do it" attitude and his plan of attack to figure out Cate's kinks. He switched her formula as our first step thinking maybe she has a protein intolerance to basic formula. She is now on Alimentum which stinks and really expensive, but will totally be worth it if it continues to work for her. Even by Friday afternoon I could already see a bit of a difference in Cate's demeanour. She was able to spend SMALL amounts of time hanging out in her bouncy seat and playing on her activity gym. Before there was absolutely NO putting her down to chill if I needed to tend to Avery or make lunch etc. But she's slowly tolerating her baby gear as each day goes on. Of course Avery could not be upstaged by Cate's first playtime. I am so, so thankful that my mom came into town on Thursday and has been here all weekend to help out. My mother in law went on a city wide search for a Moby Wrap for me so I can start to wrap Cate when I need my hands free but she doesn't want put down. And with Mark home for the weekend, I finally feel less stressed and have been able to mellow out with all the extra help and with Cate's improving disposition. It truly takes a village to raise two children...at least this week:)

It's now Sunday morning and Cate is doing so, so, so, so much better. Our new pediatrician wants me to call in on Monday and give him an update on the Alimentum formula. If it wasn't doing the trick over the weekend, our next step would be to treat Cate for reflux with some medication. Not that I want my two week old on medication, but I am open to just about anything at this point. These have been the hardest days ever and it's indescribable to see your brand new baby screaming in pain for hours and hours out of the day. Newborns are supposed to sleep 22 out of 24 hours a day and Cate was up for 6-8 hour spurts in pain. So thank you Alimentum for doing the trick...and I pray that it continues to help soothe Cate's tummy/formula intolerance. We are looking forward to really seeing Cate's personality come out and we are excited to enjoy our new baby girl.
