Cate's Birth Day

Our sweet baby girl is finally here! She wasn't coming out on her own so we checked into the hospital on Saturday morning for a scheduled induction. Because I'm always interested in the birth story and the timeline of events, I will give a play by play of the day. We got to the hospital at 7:15 am on Saturday, June 25. I was hooked up to pitocin by 8:30 and contractions immediately took a good pattern and got very strong. I was dilated to 3 cm when I got the epidural around 10:00. Our family came up to visit and keep us company for awhile. Avery came to see Mommy and Daddy and hopefully meet her baby sister, but Cate wasn't coming out without a fight. So my parents took her home for lunch and a nap.
I was only 4-5 cm around 3:00 so everyone else left. We thought this would take awhile and I was beginning to question whether she would even be born that day. We tried to rest and waited for the doctor to come check my progress again. Dr. Hurtado came in around 5:30 and I was 9.5 cm and we were almost ready to push. I was shocked and we called our family to get to the hospital soon. I started pushing around 6:00, pushed through 3 contractions and Cate was born at 6:18 pm! It was so much faster and easier than Avery's birth. Mark and I were in tears over seeing our new little girl. It was so surreal and there is no possible way to describe the feelings and emotions of seeing that little person enter the world and become your own. Cate screamed and cried and screamed and cried...she has a healthy set of lungs. She weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces and was 20 inches long. She has a very full head of wavy, dark brown hair. She looks very much like Avery at birth but not identical. It has been fun pulling up pictures of Avery as a baby and seeing how much they look alike. I will do a post on that some other time:) Avery was able to meet Cate shortly after birth and was pretty impartial to her baby sister. I think it was all just a bit overwhelming. The waiting room was full of Lins/Shelfer family. Brian and Catherine and sweet Brooks had been in town all week visiting so there was a lot of out of town family in to see them and meet Brooks. So they all flooded the waiting area! Avery was celebrated in a big way too. She received MANY big sister gifts and even got a special sibling cake in the hospital. She did well through the entire experience but was missing her Mommy and Daddy. Needless to say, she was very excited when we came home on Monday afternoon. Our sweet Cate is doing wonderful! We had a surprisingly great first night at home. She would wake to eat, we would swaddle her back up and she passed back out immediately. We got some great sleep. Last night however was not so great. She has some tummy/gas issues and was pretty fussy all night long. Regardless, it is amazing to wake up with an extra person in the house. Having two girls is so awesome and my heart is overflowing with love for these little people. I have never felt more blessed- I have a wonderful, devoted husband who loves his girls more than words can express. And I am mommy to two beautiful, perfect children. God is so good to us and we are truly blessed. I can't wait to see what's in store for our family and our children and to see where God takes us.
